To explain why I may make a friend request without first leaving a comment - my smart phone turns out not to be smart enough to let me leave comments (apart from a status update)...so as I peruse users, and notice one that attracts me, I'll send a friend request. Of course I'd like to interact when I'm in a position to, later...but that's the only reason why.
